About me

Originally from Spain, I have been living in the UK for the last nine years, first in Birmingham, where some relatives live, and now in Newbury (West Berkshire).
I have been tutoring on a one to one basis and teaching in International Schools for over nine years, helping students with varying abilities and multicultural backgrounds to improve both their knowledge and their exam results in Maths, Physics and Further Maths.
I am a patient and easy going person with a natural ability for explaining and clarifying concepts, helping students to perform to the best of their abilities.
At present, I combine my role as a Maths teacher at a college in the West Berkshire area with online tutoring.
Before entering the world of education, I worked as an Environmental Consultant, specialised in Air Quality and Climate Change Projects. The experience gained in these projects, in which Maths, Science, Technology and Business meet, has provided me with the opportunity of presenting realistic situations to you in which some of the topics you will be learning about are actually applicable and not merely abstract, empty concepts with no bearing on real life.
On a personal level, I try to keep a balance between physical activity (I like swimming, and I am training for my Karate 2nd DAN) and intellectual pursuits – I read as much as I can, and enjoy widening my knowledge of Physics and Maths.
Furthermore, I volunteer in environmental activities, such as the cleaning of beaches and projects involving the measurement of parameters of fluvial waters.

How lessons are

The lessons are via Zoom using BitPaper as online interactive whiteboard, for which I suggest you to have a graphic tablet.
My teaching experience has shaped my approach to tutoring not as a single 60-minutes event but as a process in which planning, teaching, and finally providing feedback -marking homework- are the three linked stages of the teaching/learning process:
Before the lesson:
I plan the lesson, taking into account your weaknesses and strengths, which I have identified when marking the homework set in the previous lesson.
The lesson itself (1 hour):
The lessons take place in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with a frequent exchange of questions and answers, which makes you remain focused while allowing me to track your progress on the spot.
I prefer quality to quantity in order to be certain that you grasp the key concepts by working out exercises of increasing difficulty.
During the lessons, I make use of different resources such as PPTs, quizzes, exam-style questions and past papers questions from my bank of resources as well as Youtube clips, Virtual Laboratories (for Physics) and Graphs software (for Maths).
In terms of exam skills, I polish general patterns that may need special attention such as the lack of accuracy in your answers, tendency to forget units, time management, struggling to maintain concentration for long periods of time, etc.
By the end of the lesson I usually set some homework.
After the lesson:
I mark the homework and give you detailed feedback.
Because each student is different, I may occasionally take some time to reflect on how I could adapt my teaching to your particular characteristics in such a way that you can make the most of each lesson. The longer I work with you, the better I get to know you, so as time passes this personalised approach leads to a greater degree of efficiency.
